The thing that we fail to ask ourselves is: what is the function of education? We think as African people that the major function of education is to prepare people for jobs. But you never ask yourself: what if the jobs do not exist? We assume that there is a job out there for every educated person, so that all we need to do is just get educated and reach out for the jobs and they’ll just fall in our hands. This is another myth. This is not the reality of this country today and it’s seldom the reality of many nations.
There are many nations in their countries today where the supply of educated people far exceeds the number of jobs available for those people. As a mater of fact, one of the reasons why we have a large number of immigrants in this country today is because there is little opportunity for educated immigrants in their own countries. 46 percent of the immigrants coming into the United States today have college degrees."
